What Depth of 3D Letters Works Best For Backlit Signs | Practical Guide

Posted by Mengban Team on Aug 4th 2026

When ordering backlit 3D logo signs, many clients simply copy the thickness data from regular non‑illuminated metal letters. This common mistake leads to uneven glow, light leakage or dim back‑glow effect on your brand wall.

Side depth is critical for back‑lit signs. This dimension leaves internal space for LED modules and controls how light spreads behind each character.

Important production note: Our standard backlit construction requires minimum 50mm side depth. It fits letters at least 15 cm in height with minimum 10 mm stroke width. Letters smaller than this cannot be produced as standard back‑lit signs.

Too shallow, light spills out from letter edges. Too deep, illumination becomes weak and shadows appear.

This practical guide helps designers and business buyers select ideal side depth for indoor backlit stainless‑steel logo signs.

Key Difference: Face Thickness VS Side Depth

Do not mix up face thickness and side depth.

  • Face thickness: the front metal panel of your logo letter, the visible surface facing viewers.
  • Side depth: the height of letter housing, where LED lights are installed inside for back‑glow effect.

Face thickness follows general stainless‑steel sign rules. For related reference, read our guide about choosing proper thickness for indoor 3D logo signs.

Recommended Side Depth By Application

For standard indoor corporate backlit logo projects, we follow proven practical ranges:

  1. Minimum‑size eligible backlit logos (letter height ≥15cm, stroke ≥10mm)

Recommended side depth: 50‑60mm

This is our production minimum housing depth, ensuring enough inner space for LED installation and stable even halo performance.

  1. Medium‑size logos (letter height 15‑40cm, most office lobby projects)

Recommended side depth: 50‑60mm

Balanced light diffusion, this is our most widely‑used specification for corporate reception walls.

  1. Large‑size logos (letter height above 40cm)

Recommended side depth: 60‑80mm

Enough inner room for more LED light sources, guarantees soft and even back glow for large‑scale branding.

Note: Light performance also ties to color temperature. You may check our article on selecting color temperature for backlit signs.

Common Mistakes To Avoid

  1. Requesting side depth below 50mm for standard production: Not feasible for our regular backlit process. Small or thin‑stroke letters cannot house LED modules properly.
  2. Excessively deep housing over 90mm for medium‑small logos: Unnecessary bulky look, back‑glow turns dark.
  3. 3.Ignoring viewing distance. If visitors view your logo from far away, prioritize larger side depth for better luminous performance.

    Final Tip

Every brand wall has unique conditions. Ceiling height, wall material and ambient room brightness will also influence your final decision.

If your logo features very small letter height or narrow strokes, standard backlit solution may not be technically achievable.

If you are a designer or procurement specialist, share your wall size, logo font and space photos, we can give you custom suggestions for your backlit logo project.
